• The Internet Wali Didi of Angara

Many parts of the Angara block in Jharkhand are covered with hillocks and forests. Socioeconomic and livelihood analysis of tribal-group in the Angara Block of Ranchi District in Jharkhand reveals that major share of the tribal block is from agriculture, especially agroforestry and integrated farming systems.  Seema calls Angara home, covered with large forests and pristine waterfalls. Unable to complete higher education due to a forced marriage at an early age, she coaxed her husband to support her complete college. “Going to college post marriage, sent my locals into a tizzy yet I continued” notes Seema.

Her keenness to learn and sit in front of a computer introduced her to ANUDIP Tattisalwai Centre supported by Accenture.  “Getting introduced to web browsers, using spread sheets, Microsoft word and presentations was my first lesson.”  Each time she learned a new lesson, she took it back to her fellow-friends at home to teach. ““Learning turned a passion for me and I loved to share it to my friends and family.”

Post her training at ANUDIP, Seema took a call, which she claims “gave meaning to her life.” She is now fondly known as “Internet Wali Didi” by her fellow villagers. Seema mobilizes women and young girls in her community as well as adjoining villages under the as a social worker of Anudip and ushers them “to use internet, safely and wisely.”

“Till date, I have trained 3500+ rural women and young girls to access various Govt. schemes, make bank transactions and browse the web to receive information on health care, agriculture, and usage of smartphones.”

Seema’s journey as an Internet Wali Didi however began with a lot of negations from the women of her village initially. Later, they were the eager first benchers to her class. “My job is simple. I just show them the endless possibilities and how the world outside is advancing with digital outside the forest.”
